Government set to auction 1,500 MHz of spectrum in February 2015

September 22, 2014

The government is planning to put up about 1,538 MHz of spectrum in various bands for sale in the auction, scheduled for February 2015.

In 700 MHz band, the government is likely to make available 93 MHz of frequency airwaves for the auctions. The reserve price for the spectrum in 700 MHz band as recommended by the Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) is four times the reserve price of spectrum in 1800 MHz band.

Further, the government will sell 117.5 MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz band, 184 MHz of spectrum in 900 MHz band and 104 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band in the February 2015 auction. Most of the spectrum in these bands will be available due to expiry of licences and the unsold spectrum in the auctions held in February 2014.

Further, the government will put for sale about 320 MHz and 720 MHz of spectrum in the 2300 MHz and the 2500 MHz bands.

In addition, the government may also make available 85 MHz spectrum in the 2100 MHz band for auctions if it is able to resolve the issue concerning spectrum with the defence ministry.

Besides the available spectrum, the government is planning to make 300 MHz spectrum for commercial mobile services available by 2017 and an additional 200 MHz of frequency airwaves by 2020.
